Cynic - Kindly Bent to Free Us

I am not a fan of Cynic but this album is something really special. Where as many conceptual/experimental albums are lost after 10 minutes in mindless egocentric guitar showoffs and mind enduring drum solo’s, there is some real music in this album.

Cynic’s first recordings feature a more punk, thrash and hardcore sound, but in the 1990s their sound changed towards a highly complex, experimental and extremely technical form of progressive metal

It is a great album !!

We can find everything on this album : experiments with other instruments, influences from other bands and even jazz/jazzfusion !! Intense music played followed by unique multilayered melodies and vocals.

But therefore it’s a difficult album. You really have to take your time to wrestle through almost 40 minutes of complex compositions. Check out the title track and you will understand me.

But it ain’t metal

I’m quoting Sean Reinert :

“It’s a bold new sound for Cynic and marks a gigantic leap in the band’s progression. We’ve had a lot of time to let this material develop and gestate, and it finally feels ready to be unleashed on the world. I’ve been in trio mode with Malone and Masvidal flushing out a zillion and one details, and couldn’t be happier about what’s happening with these songs. They are truly alive!”

It has become a generic melodic album but I can’t see any metal anymore in this ! No hardrock, no technical deathcore. It became the perfect album for the lost Pink Floyd fan. I will listen to Swallow The Sun, Woods of Ypres and Solstafir.
