Alcest is a French black metal band, led by the vocalist and guitar player Neige. Their music is a mix of shoegaze and post-rock, while they have five studio albums to date. The most recent one, Kodama, was released in 2016.
Alcest formed in 2000. Neige and Winterhalter recorded their first demo in 2006, which was followed by their debut album “Souvenirs d’un autre monde” in 2007. The album was well-received by critics and helped establish the band’s unique sound. In 2010, Alcest released Écailles de lune. The album went even farther than their debut had with its success, solidifying the reputation of the innovative group. Since then, Alcest has continued to push the boundaries of what is possible in heavy music.
Alcest was originally a black metal band, but their sound evolved over time. Their fourth album was an atmospheric and dreamy departure from their roots; while Kodama saw them return to a more metallic sound with the same ethereal melodies and beauty that has become their trademark. They are one of the most exciting bands in heavy music today- and it’s clear to see how much they have changed. From their beginnings as a black metal band, they’ve quickly grown into something truly special.
